Review of Shopgirl (2005) by John G — 14 May 2008
I cannot admit that the flick "Shopgirl" is in the "blooming"dale category but it is worthy enough for one to "Macy" it. The luscious Claire Danes stars as Mirabelle Buttersfield, that is butter not parkay.
She plays a lonely department store clerk (why a beauty like Claire Danes is lonely baffles me. She is not too much of a hard sale.) who is being romanticized by a quirky oddball and a older millionaire.
Both of these male protagonists are departmentally stored in opposite ends of the male spectrum. Steve Martin plays the pre-geriatric mula man named Ray Porter and Jason Schwartzman plays the free-spirit Jeremy Kraft.
And let me tell you Mr. Kraft continually wishes that Ms. Butter spreads it for him. I must give the actors credit and not debit for their charming performances. The art direction & the choreography of the film were spectacular in capturing the essence of the incandescent shop-world and the L.
A. solitude. Martin, who also scribed the film, did not jerk us with his pragmatic screenplay. However, Director Anand Tucker clumsy direction was not worth a JC Penney. Even though not a perfect cinematic component inventory, "Shopgirl" is credible enough to give it a "go see" green light special.
*** Average.
