Review of Shopgirl (2005) by Kory C — 09 Dec 2009
Steve Martin is in a rut, and "Shopgirl" gives me the impression he's going through an extended midlife crisis. The novella was a dainty recycled love story which would have never reached bookshelves without his name, but at least had more charm than this one-note film version directed by Anand Tucker.
Jason Schwartzman never fails to make me laugh, and he easily steals the picture from Martin, who seems to be under the influence of sedatives, and Danes, who would probably make a better glove counter clerk than she does an actor.
