Review of Sholay (1975) by Scott C — 19 Jul 2008
Best Bollywood Movie of All Time! If you're thinking about getting into to Bollywood cinema, do yourself a huge favor and start with 'Sholay'. There's a reason it's the highest grossing Indian film of all time. It's got action, adventure, romance, great musical numbers and the greatest Indian actor of all time - Amitabh Bachchan - He's definitely the Chow Yun Fat of Hindi cinema. This guy just oozes cool.
This film has sometimes been referred to as a 'curry western'. It most.
Certainly is a western set in India. It feels like a Sergio Leone flick, complete with wild shootouts, horse chases, a fight on top of a speeding train, a woman dancing on broken glass to appease the villain, so he won't kill her lover, plus a guy with no arms kicking another guy's butt with his feet!
It's wild, it's wacky and it's a 3-hour epic. All Indian movies seem to be 3 hours! It's criminal that most western action/adventure fans still haven't seen this thing yet. Please, Mr. Tarantino...this is definitely 'Rolling Thunder' material if I ever did see it.
