Review of Sholay (1975) by Arjun S — 23 Aug 2011
Without a doubt in my top five Bollywood films, perhaps the top 3. Being the kind who rolls his eyes at the love triangles, mushy forbidden romances, and Romeo & Juliet remakes that fill up Bollywood's coffers, I was skeptical when my old man popped in a flick that was older than Reaganomics, but I was hooked within the first five minutes.
Discount the sound effects and superhuman feats in the fight scenes--it's an old movie, after all-- and you're left with an action packed film with a couple of badasses and their pistols against an army of dacoits lead by Gabbar Singh.
Amjad Khan's fantastic acting and memorable quotes place Gabbar as #2 on my Top Villains from Movies List, behind Scar from the Lion King by inches but miles above #3 (The Emperor/Darth Sidious, for the record).
Anyway, if you like Bollywood's acting and setting but are tired of sappy gushy lovey-dovey nonsense, this is the move for you.
