Review of Sholay (1975) by Thérèse F — 05 Jun 2008
This is one of those 70's icons that holds up only on that level. It is basically a mix of "Once Upon a Time in the West" and "The Magnificent Seven" . It has all the same elements those movies have, and some direct references.
I can imagine being a 12 year old in 1975 thinking this was the coolest damn thing ever. It's a great reference to the tone of the major market movie world in the 70's. I was a bit annoyed that the songs weren't translated.
However is is obvious from this perspective why Amitabh Bachchan became the icon of the era, he truly was the Clint Eastwood of the Indian cinema.
