Review of Shock Corridor (1963) by Nate W — 20 Jul 2010
As with most of his film's, Sam Fuller's "Shock Corridor" goes for over-the-top shock value when it could have made a more lasting impact with a more subtle approach. Playing patients in a mental institution affords actors a good opportunity to "nut it up" on screen, but without careful measurement, the performances simply become an exercise in shouting and the flailing of limbs.
The best performance in this movie comes from the one sane principal character played by Constance Towers, who watches her journalist boyfriend go to pieces while investigating undercover in a psychiatric hospital.
