Review of Shock Corridor (1963) by Tim M — 25 Aug 2011
A window into the dark ages. The barbarity of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest-era mental health is on display, this film put out the same year as when the Cuckoo's takes place, 1963. Strippers only undressed to sequinned underwear, and focused on singing instead of dancing with not a pole in sight! It's longer than needed.
In particular, the morbidly obese patient's opera scene is incredibly annoying and superfluous. You can see the inspiration for a variety of things, from the creepy song and dance of a solitary female in Eraserhead, to Chappelle's Black racist leader.
Controversial for it's time, almost half a century ago, now it's just a bizarre look into the past. The ECT and rainy hallway scenes are well done though.
