Review of Shock Corridor (1963) by Niels S — 26 Jun 2011
Shock Corridor is like the ugly kid brother of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I meaner, leaner, more unapologetic view of and commentary against the mental health institutions of the early 60's.
Sam Fuller isn't one to pull punches, ever, and God bless him for that. He had the guts to film this thing raw and visceral. Get squeamish, get offended, get uncomfortable. This is the story he wants to tell and by God he won't let any of you off easy. This is mental health, this is disorder, this is shock therapy frying the mind, this is a man who goes into a mental hospital, pretending to be mentally unsound, to solve a recent murder that occurred there, which he hopes will lead to a Pulitzer, and will not come out the same and may not come out at all.
This is Shock Corridor.
