Review of Shark Night 3D (2011) by Matthew K — 16 Jan 2012

The film knows what it is. Hell, it knows what it expects to be. And it has fun with the fact. This film, yes different in a way, is very much the same as 'Piranha'. Instead of hundreds of sharp-toothed little bastards terrorizing drunk teenagers out on a lake, there are merely a handful of 'bigger' bastards with sharp teeth who terrorize drunk teenagers on a different lake.

The 'ridiculous' and down right 'over-the-top' is present throughout, creating some very bad, but quite enjoyable death scenes. One that involves a guy holding onto a tree as a shark leaps out of the water, grabs him, and pulls him back into the water.

There is also a scene where a boat begins to stull because of 'jaws-vision' telling us that the shark is biting the propeller, which had me straight up laughing. Another ridiculous scene involves a guy, who earlier in the film had his arm bitten off-and after the death of his girlfriend-has walked out into the water with a spear hoping to kill the shark who cost him a limb and a lover.

This seems stupid, because how will he A) know the shark will come to him? and B) know he's going to kill it? Well, first the shark does indeed come to him-after sensing him making waves in the water, and also the guy does in fact kill it.

First of all, the shark is much bigger and should no doubt have the upper hand in winning the fight, but yet after a handful of punches(yes punches) to the head of beast, the guy finds time to stab it with a spear, killing it almost immediately.

That's one giant win for man... By the end, like many other campy-bloody-teen movies, a last second 'glimpse' tells us that a sequel is swimming towards us from a distance.
