Review of Shanghai (1938) by Allan C — 05 Jan 2011
A terrific cast, featuring John Cusak, Gong Li, Chow Yun-Fat, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Franka Potente, beautiful production design and photography make up for a rather conventional storyline. Regarding the story, it's only the setting that sets this film apart from countless other stories.
It's essentially "Casablanca" set in Shanghai. Visually, I think this film borrowed a lot from the superior "Shanghai Triad", which also featured Gong Li and is set about 10 years prior to this film.
And any film that has at least one or two scenes of Chow Yun Fat shooting a gun is of course worth watching.
