Review of Shane (1953) by Dylan D — 30 Jul 2006
Shane is one of western that doesn't come around very often. The success of the film most likely went to the masterful direction of George Stevens but most of all, the inspiring performance by Alan Ladd.
Ladd portrayed Shane as a nice enough person who wasn't mean, yet stern enough to be a man who shouldn't be messed with. The climatic gunfight at the end will go down as one of the greatest. Jack Palance's performance as the evil gunslinger was fantastic which is neat because he only spoke a few lines.
Shane is one of the most beautiful westerns ever crafted, speaking in terms of the breathtaking scenery and performances from Alan Ladd, Jack Palance, and the lovely Jean Arthur. It deserves its title as one of the best of the western genre and should be remembered for many years to come.
