Review of Shame (2011) by Yee-Yin Y — 01 Dec 2012
Filmed with a minimalist style and with technical precision, the film to a large degree succeeds with invoking a sense of depravity, loneliness and isolation of those who battle addictions and deal with a damaged sense of self.
But there is a feeling that the film could have dug deeper, perhaps to offer a glimpse of the cause? Or maybe an epilogue to show some kind of improvement to convey hope? Such as it was, there is no sense of closure (or beginning either for that matter) after sitting through 2 hours of frustrating, erotic-less sex scenes (one too many), and one is simply left with a kind of emotional paralysis (perhaps that was the point, so viewers can feel what it's like).
