Review of Shakespeare in Love (1998) by Faichan A — 15 Nov 2010
Most will say this is sour grapes, however it is not. There are good qualities to this film...the performances and chemistry between the leads, it's original, witty, funny and romantic all good qualities of a film.
Overall, I liked the filmâ¦.but certainly did not LOVE it. By comparison however I would take âAs Good As it Getsâ? any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Thereâ(TM)s a film that was original, funny, witty, romantic and the leads were fantasticâ¦.
And to this day, people remember and quote this film. Shakespeare In Love lacked something that simply couldn't make it best picture material...maybe it was trying to be "too good" and failed.
In a year where "Saving Private Ryan", "The Truman Show" and "The Thin Red Line" all were released...I'm sorry this is far from best picture material. To this day. people will talk about "Saving Private Ryan" because of it's impact, message, daring qualities and importance.
..a filme derserving of a Best Picture Oscarâ¦."Shakespeare In Love" is a film easily forgotten if not for itâ(TM)s upset Oscar night. So in a sense, the only reason to really remember this film is because it upset an American Classic.
Sour grapesâ¦I think not!!
