Review of Shaft (1971) by Trill F — 10 Aug 2009
This is aimed at the black cinema crowd but it is an interesting film. Shaft's plot is simple and pretty much straight forward, the best thing about this film is the wonderful opening song which won an Oscar, I love the way he enters the film with that playing.
This is not a nice film though, there is a lot of violence and Shaft goes through women like cigarettes and doesn't seem to mind which girl he has. Shaft is also a strong man who has his own rules, listens to no one, gives the orders and doesn't take them, and doesn't mind making jokes out of white people.
I can't help thinking that many gangsters, and rappers have looked at his style and copied him, why do black people have to come across like this in film? I wouldn't say I'm the biggest fan of this film but it's not to bad.
