Review of Shadows and Fog (1991) by Jos C — 05 Jan 2009
Another great dramatic comedy from woody allen and a pretty good one at that. taking influences from brecht, fritz lang (especially m), the german expressionist movement, and others, its a film packed with big names, good jokes, and existential angst.
the camera usage in this film is some of the best ive ever seen though. the regular shadowy, backlit shots are always impressive, but I was particularly struck with a few scenes that focused in on the characters while they conversed, the longest of which was in the brothel.
it may not be allens best film of all time, but his writing and filmmaking craft are good enough to make this more than worth seeing.
