Review of Shadow of a Doubt (1943) by Jon G — 27 Nov 2007
Of all his masterpieces, Hitchcock considered this to be his favorite. Though not as pulse pouding as Strangers on a Train or North by Northwest, nor as shocking as Psycho or Vertigo, this film still works as a brooding character study.
Teresa Wright is a doe-eyed teen who idolizes her Uncle, played by the chillingly austere Joseph Cotten. All's well when uncle comes to visit. Then young Charlie begins to suspect he is the infamous "Merry Widow Murderer.
" The film then turns into a harrowing game of cat and mouse. Not perfect, but still a effective little shocker.
