Review of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978) by Todd D — 06 Oct 2010
Not as bad as the critics make it out to be, but not that good, either. Great music by The Beatles, unfortunately not performed by the Beatles (sometimes it works - Aerosmith's "Come Together" and Earth, Wind, and Fire's "Got To Get You Into My Life," both of which were big hits - but most of the time it doesn't - Steve Martin's over-the-top "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" and Dianne Steinberg's gaudy "Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds," among many others).
This was the predecessor to the much better "Across the Universe," but lacks the cohesion of a decent story, direction, and acting. But, still, in all, it is campy fun - if you have nothing better to do, or if you want to see what killed Peter Frampton's career.
