Stark, arresting sex drama that provides real insight into how who we are in our private lives is vastly different than the image we present to the outside world. The cast is excellent and Soderbergh's script and direction make a strong impression without being flashy.

This was the movie that helped start the American indie movie craze, so it's historically important as well. Add it all up and you have a modern classic.
