Review of sex, lies, and videotape (1989) by Jackson P — 22 Aug 2018
Sex, Lies and Videotapes catapulted Steven Soderberg into the big league as well as kickstarted the indie film craze (which was further cemented by Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs only a few years on). This film is a voyeuristic look at a sexually repressed woman and the arrival of one man changes certain dynamics within the house.
James Spader is especially good with his low-key voice and subtle charm which borderlines on creepy. Can you imagine a film like this made today? I can't. Sex, Lies and Videotapes is the work of an auteur.
You should probably rent it to see how well a film can be prepared without the massive cash input one associates with a Hollywood production.
