Review of sex, lies, and videotape (1989) by Derrick%20 N — 13 Nov 2018
Steven Soderbergh's debut and a film with many known faces. The budget is small, but the film is very character driven so it's not suffering from it.
We meet a couple. She lacks hunger for sex, he bones her sister. There are few people here, but the man's friend is also involved here. Not explicit, but there is an sexual tone here. The film is weird but not that freaky, really.
It does not cover much plot - or characters either, actually. Not many big scenes, but a rather slow grinder that remains it grip. That's quite impressive.
Fitting title - it's the film summed up. I tend to mix up Steven Soderbergh and David Cronenberg - name wise, and I thought this was an early Cronenberg film to be honest - it reminded me quite a bit of his style. No matter which one of them that theoretically made it, it would not be either one's best work for me. But i's arguably Steven's most known work.
Cool ambient music are mainly used here. I like that. OK film, but it does feel a bit dated, sadly.
6 out of 10 videotapes.
