Review of Seven Swords (2005) by Aaron T — 28 Apr 2008
I need to re-watch this one, simply because I had a very hard time following the story up until the final act. That said, this is a wuxia film that is very different than the ones we are used to in the west, such as 'Hero' and 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'.
Tsui Hark is a veteran of this genre, and along with choreographer/star Lau Kar Lung, manages to bring a fresh mix of the new and old to the screen. The fight scenes are incredibly shot and staged, and the costume design is pretty far out for a film of this nature.
I would definately recommend this movie to fans of the wuxia genre who are looking for something a bit outside of the box, just be warned that it's a bit hard to stay caught up with the story, at least it was for me.
