Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Anssi V — 10 Oct 2011
So yeah, it's a classic. But is it the greatest movie of all time like some claim? In my honest opinion, no. And don't get me wrong, the movie is good, possibly even great. It's just that while the movie has aged surprisingly well and holds some truly unforgettable scenes and characters, I just didn't find it truly awe-inspiring.
It took time to learn some of the characters from one another, especially the beginning of the movie was kind of slow and perhaps the tremendous hype that this movie has gathered kind of ruined the experience for me.
I expected more. But, as I said, the movie is good. The acting is solid, some of the characters are extremely well-written, the directing and cinematography are good and the score is enjoyable. And this movie is revolutionary, I can admit that.
The whole way of telling a story and combining different story elements is nothing new to our time, but for its era this movie really was something else. So if you haven't watched this one, do so.
Do it now, because it really is a nice experience. Just don't set your expectations unrealistically high, like I did, or else you'll be disappointed.
