Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Keenan S — 26 Nov 2013
After missing out for so many years, I finally watched the Akira Kurosawa masterpiece, Seven Samurai and I was blown away by it. The premise itself is simple enough: a village of farmers hires a ragtag group of samurai to fight off bandits, but it's a film that turns such simplicity into a stunning epic that encompasses everything a person could ever want from a film epic.
There's a sweeping storyline, great characters, moments of hilarious humor, epic battle scenes, sprinklings of drama, shocking reveals, love, loss, and so much more. It's a film that has definitely earned its reputation as the classic it is, but I was even more impressed by it since it gave me so much more than that as well.
If you enjoy a good film epic, a good Asian film, or just a great film altogether, Seven Samurai delivers the goods in spades. It's a superb epic in every way and it has not aged one bit.
