Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Gautham R — 22 Mar 2015
Not much more has to be said about this one. Its a Kurosawa film with pretty amazing fluid camerawork, often considered to contain some of the most finest action sequences in film history(which it certainly does when one considers the context of the time period and the limitations films had back then), and has a very memorable ensemble cast which is responsible for a whole lot of character archtypes we've come to love in action/adventure films today.
Also fascinating is how death and violence is treated in the film, it's an intriguing balance of almost indifference and rapid sudden deaths coupled with pretty fascinating slow motion sequences, and tortorous dirty deaths w/o a speck of blood but with a grand sense of brutality.
The ending is also haunting and reflective. At the end of the day, any film afficionado should watch this to observe a master at work, one who made film what it was today, and in some ways continues to be the best example of a cinematic experience in comparison to even today's films.
