Review of Serpico (1973) by Nicolas K — 13 Aug 2009
A fine movie. Lumet does his thing, Pacino does his thing. It doesn't really set the world alight (in 2009) but it's a great picture with uniformly excellent performances portrayed by the reliably steady hand of Lumet. An excellent companion piece to Dog Day Afternoon, but not quite as good. Perhaps no one makes movies like this anymore because everyone accepts that the world is corrupt. Or perhaps no one makes movies like this any more because the world has no interest in the fact that the world is corrupt. 36 years later the movie makes a valid point..... And it reminds us that not a great deal has changed. In hollywood, is the advent of special effects, or is it a greater, more subversive problem?
Put it this way, after this rambling incoherent drunken pile of bollocks, I'd still rather watch this than any michael bay film.......
