Review of Serpico (1973) by Daniel S — 09 May 2010
Al Pacino Sidney Lumet, with two people as highly talented as them, it's impossible to go wrong and Serpico is proof. What makes this so good is the fact that Serpico is not a perfect person. In his quest to fight corruption in the New York police, he winds up alienating friends, family and his girlfriend.
The movie also questions whether what he does is practically right. Sure, morally theryre wrong, but who is hurt the film asks, and the corruption is so deep seeded that it makes you wonder if he should even bother trying.
Unlike a similar film, On the Waterfront(which is also great) where the good guys and bad guys are clearly drawn, the line between good and bad in Serpico is vague. In addition none of this would matter if not for the oscar worthy performance of pacino.
We feel his frustrations and anger every step of the way. Also a nice musical score.
