Pacino isn't only chasing bad guys in this movie but also to rid the NYPD of bad hats. Many dirty white cops populate the police force (I counted only one black corrupt cop in the movie) but 'Serpico' shows Pacino busting the ass of two degenerate blacks. I found this racial casting troubling. The movie shows three blacks assaulting and nearly raping a woman, but what about showing whites doing the dirty deed? Pacino puts in a half-decent performance as a cop intent on maintaining the whiteness of his soul from the permissiveness of graft around him, which even takes its toll on two.
