Review of Serenity (2005) by Eldin B — 11 Nov 2013
After having recently sat through FIREFLY for the first time (and thoroughly enjoyed) it wasn't long after I tackled the cinematic follow up. Not usually a fan of Whedon's ventures, I really dug both the series and the film.
A fitting farewell to a series given an untimely death sentence - manages to lift the restraints of episodic TV sci-fi and picks up the scale and scope not previously seen in the series. It's easy to see why it's such a cult fan hit - Fillion has natural charisma - and the nods to good old fashioned Westerns are handled well.
The film (and the series) was at its weakest when dealing with the central character River - but at its nuts and bolts it is clever, funny and ballsy. The distant cousin of STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE.
