Review of September (1987) by Kenneth B — 19 Mar 2013
I watched this in what was effectively a double-bill with Another Woman, which I quite enjoyed. Unfortunately September is a less good film. It is a film with a troubled production history, Allen shot the film twice because he didn't like the original cut.
So he recast it and filmed it again. I have read that he still wasn't happy with it but nonetheless the result was the version that we have now. This might go some way to explaining the films short-comings.
September is ponderous and unengaging and most of all we, the audience, don't care about the characters. It is all to distant, there is no emotional investment here, once again, when the director apparently feels a particular way about a production it has a way of seeping through into the final product.
