It is clear why, when people consider the oeuvre of Woody Allen, this rather grim drama does not come immediately to mind. Only Interiors, his 1978 Cries and Whispers-inspired masterpiece, creates a similar atmosphere of quiet, enthralling, grueling angst.

Dianne Wiest and Sam Waterston - Allen veterans by this point in their careers - provide fine performances, and it is a treat to have character actors-extraordinaire Denholm Elliott and Jack Warden (adding moments of marvelously silent, nihilistic intensity to the overall emotional meltdown) among the troupe.

Elaine Stritch, hardly an expected candidate for an Allen venture, is nonetheless thrilling. This is an outstanding, quietly menacing, hopeless drama full of fractured people in need of "a million little things to keep them busy.
