Review of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) by Bob F — 30 Nov 2013
There is a reason why you don't see many end-of-the-world rom coms. How do you convey a sense of ever-lasting love when the world is about to be destroyed by an asteroid? Indeed, the big problem with the movie is that it lurches between romance, comedy and end-of-the-world depression.
Some of the best scenes are those in which secondary characters react to the end of the world. For instance, Dodge's best friends (played by Rob Corddry and Connie Britton) throw an end of the world party where everyone tries things thank that would never do in any other situation such as serial one-night stands and shooting heroin.
And if you are going to watch the end of the world there are worse people to spend it with than Steve Carell's everyman Dodge and perky Penny (played by Keira Knightley). Well acted with some real laughs, but the attempts at a rom com ending and the constant changes in tone let the movie down.
