Review of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) by Cristian B — 22 Sep 2018
A surprising, funny, touching, and off-beat movie about the end of the world. Writer Scafaria makes an impressive directorial debut and creates an original story full of humor and heartbreak. Carell and Knightley make an unlikely pairing, but create a delicate and moving connection.
Carell continues to impress in another strong performance, as a man finding himself again, in the face of impending doom. Knightley does some of her best work and displays a range of emotions, from kooky humor to genuine pain and sadness.
There is also a strong supporting cast of off-kilter characters. The tonal shifts, from comedy to drama, can be a little jarring at times, but thanks to strong writing, fine performances, and sharp direction, the movie is one of the best surprises of the summer.
