Review of Scum (2009) by Andrew R — 26 Jul 2007
If you ever wondered why Ray Winstone has had such a good career in the movie industry, then this is the film that made it happen. A very dark and very blunt look at the borstal system, and the effect of institutionalisation that it has on those youths imprisoned within it.
The harder parts to watch are some of the most realistic, ranging from the violence to suicide. The film benefits from Alan Clark's style of filmmaking, which just seems to capture the grittiness of life.
Overall, one of the best British films ever made.
