Review of Scrooge (1970) by Matthew D — 17 Dec 2018
A tiresome adaptation with bland music.
The surprisingly dull Scrooge (1970) leaves much to be desired. Albert Finney gives the only memorable performance and even then, his singing is awful. Which leads me to Scrooge's main issue. It's a musical with generic scoring, awkward lyrics, and horrendously meek vocals. It's so strange to hear characters quietly trying to mumble out some lines while the music tries to be much larger than it is really.
The direction is fair, but so lackluster compared to the 1984 version with George C. Scott. I would much rather watch that adaptation for a serious take on Scrooge. I would also recommend The Muppet Christmas Carol for a fun musical of Charles Dickens' classic novel.
Overall, this movie meanders to the bitter end. Even the most fun aspect, the joyous finale, takes so long that I almost forgot the scene had not ended. I think that I nearly fell asleep trying to finish Scrooge. Skip this one and watch the aforementioned films instead. Scrooge is just awful, unfortunately.
