Review of Scrooge (1970) by David B — 26 Dec 2009
Albert Finney headlines this 1970 musical take on Dickens's timeless Christmas tale.
Finney's Scrooge verges on the comically misanthropic - in his first song he croons 'I hate people' - but he's at his best when teamed with Kenneth More's excellent Ghost of Christmas Present.
There's a paucity of memorable music on offer - except for the genuinely hummable 'Thank You Very Much' - and Alec Guinness's scene-chewing Marley is a disappointment. Despite the strong finish, Scrooge will forever languish in the shadow of other, better productions.
