Review of Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015) by Craig F — 13 Dec 2015
Dismissed by some as Superbad meets The Walking Dead, co-writer/director Christopher Landon's gross-out-gore/character comedy is goofily juvenile but good grisly fun, with an amiable cast, some seriously messy splatter and a few surprisingly off-colour zombie-sex giggles. Simply entertaining cinema, with an irreverence and exuberance which makes for a film that will have you laughing out loud on several instances. Genre fans close in age to the characters depicted onscreen should be appreciative of the enjoyably familiar mix of inspired comedy moments, smart zingers, grossout gags and nudity offered by the apostrophe-phobic Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. Although the makeup and visual effects will meet the standards of the genre's disciples, there's little that's groundbreaking about another American suburb overrun by ghouls after some bad science. Coarsely explicit groin-centric slapstick and trendy 'zompocalypse' theme aside, this is a surprisingly lively and agreeably goofy throwback to the 'Fright Night'-style teen horror comedies of the 1980s. Definitely only a movie for devoted genre fans and who can appreciate the charms of unapologetic B-grade fare. It's silly, crass and meaningless. But damn, it's funny. The end result is an okay movie that has some decent scares and a few good laughs.
VERDICT: "In The Zone" - [Mixed Reaction] These kinds of movies are usually movies that had some good things, but some bad things kept it from being amazing. This rating says buy an ex-rental or a cheap price of the DVD to own. If you consider cinema, ask for people's opinion on the film. (Films that are rated 2.5 or 3 stars).
