Review of Scarface (1983) by Mike I — 26 Sep 2015
This movie is like a smoking hot blonde theoretical physicist at a bar. You love her for the body but don't appreciate her mind. This movie on its surface is very slick and very violent, hallmarks of Brian DePalma's work. The writing of Oliver Stone during a time when he was doing his best work is the backbone of the movie, depicting the rise and fall of a very bad but complex man. Finally, Al Pacino gave this movie a soul and brought it to life. It's unfortunate that the real message of this movie has been obscured by its packaging. Kids idolize Tony Montana nowadays, but that also may be more a sign of the times than a reflection on people not understanding the deeper message of this movie, namely that ambition directed the wrong way can lead to a man's downfall.
Just remember that sometimes it's nice to appreciate something for its mind as well as its beauty.
