Review of Scarface (1932) by Knox M — 10 May 2017
Upon its release in 1983, Brian De Palma's Scarface was criticized for "not telling a human story." What makes that so ironic is that Tony Montana's downfall is due to his ultimate inability to not let the human element affect his mindset.
It is, in fact, a very down-to-Earth film. It is also a flawed masterpiece, featuring trashy zooms and outright bad acting from Pfeiffer, but that's counterbalanced by a fantastically over-the-top turn from Pacino and often brilliant direction by De Palma.
Yet, in all of its flaws, I doubt anybody who witnesses it will forget about it.
