Review of Sawdust and Tinsel (1953) by Jurgen H — 26 Dec 2007
A truly great film created by bergman. I have been fortunate enough to have seen roughly 8 of his films now, about 6 of them this past 4 months and I am glad I moved past the slight disappointment I felt with 'cries and whispers' (which I will watch again because I am convinced I wasn't paying close enough attention to the film and that's what led to my disappointment).
he is truly one of the greatest directors ever, his films like 'persona', 'scenes from a marriage', and 'saraband' are among the most emotionally devastating films i've seen in my life.
they are more than regular entertainment, they move toward true pieces of art like a picasso painting. this film is great, it is about a traveling circus and the emotional unraveling of the circus ring leader and his beautiful (and I do mean beautiful) mistress.
the exchanges in bergman's films in which two people are digging deep within themselves to express their misery or selfishness are among the greatest moments of dialogue i've ever seen in movies.
I still remember the exchange in 'winter light' in which the priest tells a woman who is in love with him about the things he can't stand about her. there is 1 or 2 exchanges in this film which captivated me.
his directing is nothing fancy but still very compelling and interesting, he no way do I agree with people who say he is a dull visionist. they are wrong, terribly wrong. this is a great film.
