Review of Savages (2006) by Tommi L — 01 Jun 2010
This is a gritty and well-acted tragic comedy. The three leading performances (Linney, Hoffman, and Bosco) were brilliant in their own ways. The screenplay was perfect and it might just be one of the 10 best screenplays of the last 10 years (In Bruges would have to be #1 on that list).
The dialogue was fresh and realistic and writer-director Tamara Jenkins was able to reach out to the audience by creating relatable characters and situations throughout the movie. The film was extremely powerful and touching and it covered the difficult topic of death in such a careful and respectable way.
The way in which the reversal of fortune in which a dying parent has to be taken care of by his children was portrayed realistically. The depths and natures of the characters were so explicit to the audience that we were able to identify with them and feel their stress and pain.
The ending of this film was the cherry on top. It was the perfect way of ending the film and it just put a smile on your face. It reminded the audience of the fact that this movie is all about life and death.
This movie gave plenty of insights of what it means to be human. Tamara Jenkins created a touching human dramedy/ character study in the wonderful film, The Savages.
