I think Scorsese outdid this film with his remake, The Departed, but not by much. There aren't many major differences, but the thing I like the most in the remake is it's slightly slower pace and better build-up.

It just seems to work better. Also, Eric Tsang as the crime lord just lacks the charisma that Jack Nicholson has in abundance, though I'm not knocking on any of the performances here as they all did a fine job.

This film did come first, though, and has to get major credit for the story that Scorsese just recycled.
