Review of Satyricon (1969) by Murat A — 07 May 2008
As I watched the movie I started off feeling that it would be a washout, given the disjointed scenes, weird music and the seeming disconnect between the acting the the backdrop.
But trust Fellini to hook you and reel you in.
Does it have a Aristotelean plot? No. Does it follow a logical sequence? No. Do characters serve as carriers of the (nonexistent) plot? No.
But does it work? Boy it does indeed. I found myself marvelling at one moment and being disgusted at the next, so powerful and evocative are the images. No portrayal of Rome have been this graphic, this brutal (no Caligula doesn't count...and that's another review), or this powerful.
Watch it and you will know what I mean.
