Review of Saturday Night Fever (1977) by Katie F — 28 Feb 2009
Frequently dismissed as a dated disco movie, Saturday Night Fever is at its core an identifiable drama about growing up. Whilst the dancing sequences are audaciously presented the most effective scenes feature protagonist Tony Manero starting to realise that heâ??s the king of a very small world and that the dance-floor that he dominates is but a mere escape from his empty and meaningless existence.
Not without its flaws in terms of various character clichés and cheesiness, John Travolta in the greatest performance of his career effectively drives through the poignant theme of trying to find oneâ??s place in the world.
