Review of Saturday Night Fever (1977) by Myro L — 27 Jun 2012
Surprisingly explicit tale of a bunch of teenage scumbags from the Brooklyn disco circuit, it has more in common with A Clockwork Orange than Grease! Its disregard for human values and its demeaning depiction of women, family and religion are flung and hurled in a pseudo-realist fashion while the film is genuinely painful to watch. The gaudy circus trudges along without rhyme or reason, the otherwise unispired plot ending in rape and a death. Why this film became a symbol of the 70s is beyond me, both as the cinematographic and dramatic value of it are lower than acceptable, even for a mainstream film.
Its saving grace is its unintentional humour, with such gems as a bridge-jumping scene set to a disco reworking of Mussorgsky's 'Night on Bald Mountain' -- the aptly titled 'Night on Disco Mountain', as well as unparalleled dialogue in the key of WTF:
"Them spicks! Look at 'em beastin' on tha floah!".
"Do you... uh... know the tango hustle?".
"What ya doin' dancing with 'im? The guy's the biggest *unt hound in Bay Ridge!".
