Review of Satin Rouge (2002) by Bob M — 29 Jun 2007
Sexy Tunisian first feature with a feminist message by Raja Amari. A single mother is tradition-bound but her daughter is not. Mother ends up sneaking around on her daughter because of her fascination with a wild club in which people are having the most fun watching belly dancing.
Belly dancing is a political act in this story. Such clubs do exist in erstwhile fundamentalist cities and I can see why people risk their standing in society to go to one.
