Review of Santa Sangre (1989) by Simon M — 05 Aug 2009
WTF. Bizarre, surreal, creepy, unique, scary, disturbing, and twisted. It vividly portrays the tragic, bleak, despairing loneliness of insanity. The bits with the protagonist providing his hands for his mother are amazing and brilliantly done. The cinematography is impressive. The story is nearly incomprehensible. The decision to have the actors speak in English gives the film the feel of a soap opera (it doesn't help that the sets look straight out of a play). This leads to much unintentional hilarity - seriously, it may as well be considered a comedy for how much I laughed. The film is certainly rich thematically, but the obvious use of metaphor is heavyhanded and pretentious.
5.5/10.
