Review of Sanctum (2011) by Tyler H — 13 Mar 2012

This is not a good movie. I'm going to say right now that I can't recommend it for anyone. Do they really expect me to believe that stalagmites and stalagmites can from words?

It wasn't as bad as I had hoped it would be.

Anyone who knows me knows I don't go to movies in January and February because these movies usually suck. The only chance these months have is if there is a solid Valentines Day movie but that doesn't happen very often. The last one I enjoyed was Hitch.

First things first. The only reason I went to this movie is because the idea of diving in caves seems really cool to me. After watching this movie there is no way I would ever do it. One of the positive things about this movie is that it never looks like it was filmed on a set. It looks like they filmed the entire movie in a cave. They probably didn't but it looks good.

This is a rare example of when 3D has worked. I loved the 3D in this movie. I'm not sure it will be as good in 2D. Maybe I liked the extra dimension because it was James Cameron 3D. I don't know but I do know that I do not like the way James Cameron has become a brand name. Can't we think of a better name for awesome 3D vs. Crap 3D?

Those are the only good things about this movie. The characters are no good. The acting is horrible. The story is lame.

Don't be fooled when you hear that it was based on a true story. I looked into it. Almost everyone dies so I wanted to see if it was true or not. It's not. It's based on a true story in that the screenwriter was once trapped in a flooding cave but other than that it's complete fiction.

Also, I find my self saying "The cave is flooding!" all the time now for no reason. That part in the movie was funny because the cave had been obviously flooding for a few hours when the guy shouted that out.

If this movie didn't have so many F-bombs I would tell everyone to go see it. It's almost so bad it's good.
