Review of Sanctum (2011) by Philip Z — 20 Oct 2013
It's not a perfect film, but I had a good time watching it. Sheesh, how many times have I said that lately? Is it too much to ask for greatness? Anyway, Sanctum is a not-that-bad thriller that makes a few mistakes, especially with the screenplay.
The final act basically turns what had been an interesting film into some crazed mad slasher thing. Ioan Gruffudd becomes gut-busting hilarious in this final act; sadly, that doesn't appear to be done on purpose.
There are numerous cliches from start to finish, but a lot of them I forgave because I was enjoying the film. I'm not sure if this film was shot in actual caves or not, but I suspect they weren't.
The section of the caves that are flooded really do look like art directed sections of a sound stage. If I find out that a sound stage was fashioned to look like a cave for these sequences, I won't be the least bit surprised.
