Review of Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2012) by Ryan C — 10 Sep 2012
"Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" isn't a bad film, its just not that good either. Well-meaning, some lovely messages to be taken away and enough of a feel-good watch to be enjoyable. I loved the chemistry between Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt, genuinely interesting characters with a wonderful sense of contrast and perfectly matched to talented actors.
I also really enjoyed Kristen Scott Thomas in this, wickedly funny and ultra bitchy, adds a much needed sense of humour. However, beyond all of this, still remains a film that is lacking something. It lacks an identity and genre.
A rom-com minus a good deal of the humour and a drama with a lack of genuine emotion, not so successfully blended. I also found, at nearly 2 hours, it lacked enough audience grab to hold my attention fully.
This gets 3 stars for being a decently crafted, well acted, if not slightly confused film.
