Review of Sakuran (2006) by Mike M — 15 Aug 2008
At times, threatens to tip over into "Memoirs of a Geisha: The Comic Book", and even when tragedy looms, Ninagawa can't quite throw off the vague air of a girly lark a la "Marie Antoinette", the last movie to attempt this mix of historical specifics and fashion-shoot aesthetic.
It remains a seductive world to spend a couple of hours in, though: beautifully shot, lit and designed, with a genuinely lovely home stretch.
